Tabula Rasa

As I was up early this morning reading and praying, I heard something that I’ve heard before but today was strangley different. I heard the birds singing. Yes, I’ve heard birds sing before but today they almost spoke to me. Today, they seemed to bring a message to me from God. No, I don’t believe that animals speak to us but as part of God’s creation, it all speaks to us of His greatness.

What I was hearing was something I believe not just Christians but everyone needs to hear. Today is a new day. Yesterday is gone, but today is new. So many of us start off our day thinking about how bad yesterday was or what we could have done differently. We start off at a deficit. We believe that the things of yesterday follow us to the next day.

THERE IS HOPE! For those who have not come to a relationship with Father through the blood of Jesus, every day is just a continuation of sin keeping you from the presence of God. Sin holds you to a line of defeat. There is no getting through it on your own. Scripture is very clear when it says, “The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Wages are different from gifts and for the unbeliever, there is only one way to destroy the wages of sin and that is by accepting the gift of God, Jesus Christ.

For every person, the mercy of God is available. One of my favorite songs is based in scripture. Lamentations 3:22-23 is one of the most powerful verses for me.

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.

As I heard those birds sing, I remembered how great God is. I remembered that God’s faithfulness is what caused those birds to sing. For those birds, it didn’t matter what happened yesterday. Today is a new day and they were singing. God took care of those birds yesterday. Just as Jesus said that His Father takes care of them, but even more importantly, He cares more about us than them. I began to think of His Word in Lamentations, my attitude overflowed with gratitude. It was through His mercies I was not consumed yesterday. Because His compassion for me (and you) did not run out yesterday, He gives me another day. As a matter of fact, this happens every single day. Every morning they are renewed. God’s faithfulness restores and renews every day.

Friend, let this be your reminder of God’s faithfulness in your life. God didn’t run out of mercy yesterday and He won’t run out today either. Today, because His compassions didn’t fail we can start today with a clean slate….tabula rasa. Put yesterday under the blood. Put today under the blood too. We’re here to pray with you, whether you are curious about God’s mercies, need a “clean slate” to your life, or if you are struggling with the mercy that is yours through Jesus Christ.

I’ll leave you with the words to that amazing song as well as, for me, one of the most anointed versions of it by Fred Hammond. Live long and prosper….

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
 “Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!”
  Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
    “Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!
2Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
3Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

  1. My mother has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer with metastases to her brain. She started radiation this week and her strength, faith, and courage has been amazing. Yesterday, she woke up with a very specific thought in her mind…. she said “the birds are singing in Gilead” but she didnt know what it meant. We played the song ‘there’s a balm in Gilead’ to see if those words were part of the song and they were not. When googling that phrase, we were brought to your post. Tears ran down my moms face as we read it to her. Of course, God led us to your words for encouragement and renewal of strength as she faces the battle of her lifetime. Thank you!

    • Katie, I’m so happy you and your mom found the words encouraging! Life isn’t always easy but God’s Word never changes. Today is a new day for your mom. I’ll be praying for her and your family. Keep me updated and please let me know how I can pray specifically. We’re here for you all.

      • Thank you so much! Specifically, we can all pray for my mom’s lungs… activity is difficult, her lungs are experiencing some inflammation related to the radiation treatments, she was started on oxygen this week, and the struggle is very real. She appears exhausted and we need God to heal her lungs and give her rest!
