What Does Restoration Mean To You?

I’ve heard the word “restoration” going around the faith-capmps for a long time.  I believe in the power of God to restore.  I believe it is God’s desire to restore His people.  However, I also believe that our thinking is very limited.  We tend to think in terms of how it will directly affect us now.

Jesus’ disciples asked, “Lord will you at this time restore the Kingdom?”   They were being very temporal and selfish.  We want it now and we want it our way.  While this may work at Burger King, it doesn’t always, and most often doesn’t work that way in our walk with Christ.  Jesus does not guarantee a “have it your way” Gospel.

I ran acress the story of Mephibosheth in 2 Samuel 9.  In case you’ve never heard of him, let me tell you a little about him.  Mephibosheth was the grandson of King Saul and the son of Jonathan, King David’s best friend.

When Mephibosheth was 5 years old, King Saul and Jonathan were killed in battle.  As his nurse grabbed him and fled, she dropped him and he broke his legs.  Because of inadequate medical techniques and maybe a lack of time, Mephibosheth was permanently crippled.

If you read the story of David, one day he inquires if there is any of King Saul’s family left.  He is informed that one remains, the son of Jonathan.  David remembers his promise to his friend; his promise to show kindness to Saul’s family.  David does just that.  He gives Mephibosheth a permanent seat at the King’s table, gives him the land that was his grandfather’s, and assigns a family to farm his land.

What a restoration!  Even though Mephibosheth did not receive a healing of his physical body, he was restored everything that he thought was lost and was provided for according to the King’s command.

With Father’s Day taking place this month, this story jumped out at me.  Many of you may not have had a go0d relationship with your father when you were growing up.  Some of you may still be struggling with your relationship even now.  I was blessed enough to have a loving father.  I may not have always seen eye to eye with him, but I don’t think I ever doubted his love.

This gave me a wonderful view of my heavenly Father.  I may not always agree with God’s plans, but I absolutely do not doubt His love for me.  While He is conforming me into the image of His Son, it becomes a battle in my flesh.  I am in constant need for setting aside my will and cutting away at this flesh.  It’s a battle that will be won through the blood of Christ and the empowerment of Holy Spirit.

Even if you do not have a good relationship with your earthly father, I encourage you to allow Christ to heal you.  Maybe your father isn’t around for that healing to manifest between both of you, but you must forgive and receive healing.  You can’t change anything from your past but you can change your present.  Dont’ hold onto things that will ultimately destroy you.  Make your step today to walk in wholeness.  Believe me, you will feel  much better.

Proverbs 17.22–A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.

  1. This touched me deeply, as I never knew my birth father, and my stepfather was harsh. I have struggled for years with anger towards the man, and it most definetely affected me in my early relationship with the Lord. It was difficult to understand what unconditional love was about, how it felt, how to respond. I was limited because I had never known that kind of love. Praise God, he heals all wounds, and releases us into His unending love. What a joy to bask in His Love.

  2. Thanks for the comment Bunny. Some have not been as blessed as others in their relationship with their father. I’m glad you have learned and experienced that love from our heavenly Father.
Even though David was hunted and wanted for dead by King Saul, David still showed honor and resotred the only one left from his family. It was not a good military move because sons were known to rise up and try to seize power. That’s why Jesus told us to even love our enemies….not always easy.
Experience the joy that comes through life in Christ!
