Weather…Or Not

I don’t know if you’ve noticed lately but it seems that winter has hit so many parts of the world harder than normal. In the US, southern regions, and especially Texas, are seeing record snowfalls and power outages. I saw where they had to use torches on the Eiffel Tower to get rid of ice. In Germany many solar panel were deemed useless because they were covered with snow and wind turbines couldn’t produce electricity because there was no wind. Even in my own area, some are saying how this winter is different and harsher than the last several. I find it interesting how many will complain about the weather, whether it’s hot or cold. Seems we just need something to complain about or blame. Maybe it’s because we can’t control it….or can we?

There’s a story in the Bible where the prophet prayed that it wouldn’t rain and for 3 1/2 years it didn’t. James tells us that Elijah had the same nature as we do. I’m not advocating for us all to pray for better weather, but I do see something in the weather that we sometimes miss. While God controls the weather, sometimes He uses us to change it for a purpose. There are a few other stories in the Bible where at God’s command, the weather was changed. Moses stretched out his staff and a great wind arose and cleared the path for the children of Israel to pass through the Red Sea on dry land. Jesus on a boat simply speaks to the wind and it ceases. Ultimately, God is in control of rain or sunshine, snow or wind.

While looking at the various sites around the world and what they have been facing with the weather, I am very much reminded of how God does what He wants to do. We can sometimes get so pious and think we can control things. It makes me laugh at how man thinks so highly of himself when there are some things that we have absolutely no control over. With all of the technology available, many forecasts are often wrong. We are sometimes shocked when things happen different to what we expected or planned for. Sometimes we even get upset, frustrated, angry, and even bitter with God because what we have toiled for doesn’t end up the way it should. While I advocate healthy eating, sometimes genetics, or some may even call it the curse, is more powerful than all of our best laid plans.

Matthew 5:43-48 The Message says:

“You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the supple moves of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that. “In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.”

I am learning that no matter what happens, God’s power and authority and love over my life doesn’t fluctuate with the weather patterns or anything else for that matter Paul asks the question….”who can separate us from the love of Christ”? He goes on to explain that nothing (NO THING) is able to separate me from the love of Christ. He lists some of those things and makes one of the boldest statements in scripture. He says that none of those things “shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Wow!!!

My true peace comes from knowing God’s intention for me. While we may face daily struggles, the position of the believer is not swayed by things of today. My heart is settled in His love for me. There are days when I feel out of balance but I have the knowledge that my faith is founded upon the Rock of Jesus. Whatever it is that you’re facing today, stop and remember where your feet are. Look up and boldly proclaim that you are His child and you know that He loves His children. Situation may or may not change but His absolute fondness and love for you is not changing.
