Take Out The Earphones

earphone

Have you noticed when you’re driving down the road or walking in a store, how many people seem to have earphones in?  Most are listening to music but some I’m sure are listening to books or sermons.  It’s almost like we don’t want to be disturbed by what is happening around us.  For some, it may be a way of saying, “I’ve got my own set of problems.  I don’t need to hear about yours.”

Driving down the road the other day, I heard this statement made very emphatically to me….TAKE OUT THE HEADPHONES!  I thought this was odd because I don’t wear them while driving.  Of course this caused me to inquire of the Lord and seek Him as to what He was saying.  I began to ask and listen as well as search the scriptures.

Let me tell you that there is an overabundance of scriptures about hearing.  Many are about God hearing our prayers.  There are also numerous exhortations to hear the voice of the Lord.  From Genesis to Revelations, we find that God places an emphasis on hearing.  The Book of Revelations repetitively says, “He who has an ear, let him hear….”

Friend, with our busy lifestyles, it is difficult to take time to listen.  For so many, you have the voices of family calling out your name, your boss telling you what you need to do, and the news telling you how bad things are.  It is no wonder why so many will turn on the TV or a movie or your computer just so you can zone out.  You don’t want to hear anything, so you drown it out with everything.  They say men can become totally deaf to everything else when their favorite team is playing.  Women are just as good at it.  In truth, we learn selective hearing.  We hear what we want and the rest goes into the filter.

ISo…take out the earphones and turn off the cell phone, TV, computer, whatever…..and listen for the voice of your Creator.  In the big picture of your life, it’s His voice you’ll want to hear anyhow.

Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away.”  But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.”
