Happy Birthday Barbie

Today in history, Barbie celebrates her birthday.  The toy that most of America would come to recognize and symbolize the progression of our nation was introduced in 1959.  This simple doll that would be the epitome of American success and give every young girl fuel to be whatever and whomever she wanted has become one the the hottest selling toys ever to hit the market.
While I believe every young woman, and young man for that matter, should have the opportunity to live their dream, like many, I am concerned about the image that this simple toy portrays.  For the not so picture perfect girl, the pressure that can be put on them is tremendous. And let’s face it, there are no picture perfect girls.  We are all flawed no matter how well we hide it.
I am not here to bash Barbie, but to encourage you in something even greater.  Please understand this truth…YOU HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE IMAGE AND LIKENESS OF YOUR CREATOR!!
One of the best videos explaining this and especially geared to young ladies is a song entitled Beautiful For Me by Nicole Nordeman.

What we all need to realize is that God made us in His image and desires a relationship with us. Sin broke that relationship but Christ came to restore it. In our sins, we have been distorted and destroyed by the enemy of our souls. With Christ, we have once again been brought back into that right relationship with our Father. Paul says that we have been made new and even adopted. In Ephesians he also declares that we have been accepted in the Beloved. Yes friend, you have been accepted into God’s family because of the atoning work of Christ on the cross. Yes, an ugly and violent act has made you beautiful in His eyes.
You don’t need to look like Barbie or even have her dream house. All you need is the creator of the universe saying He loves you…and meaning it! Give your heart to the One who deserves it.
