If Grace Is An Ocean…

Yesterday, I was talking to a brother about grace.  He was sharing with me his walk of grace and what brought him to where he is now.  What a wonderful topic to share between believers.
Grace is a topic that you will hear about quite often in churches. Everyone knows Amazing Grace but do we really know what it means.

Amazing Grace Lyrics
John Newton (1725-1807)

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
‘Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

When we’ve been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’ve first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

On any given Sunday, pastors around the world are mentioning the word “grace.” Followers of Christ will often talk about it and boast how they were “saved by grace.”

Miriam-Webster defines it as:

a : unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification
b : a virtue coming from God
c : a state of sanctification enjoyed through divine grace

One definition that Strong uses is:
of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues

Most Christians define it as “unmerited favor” which is really receiving something you didn’t deserve, which is different from mercy which is not receiving what you deserve. According to Strong’s, it’s more than just receiving a pardon but also a divine empowerment to live according to God’s will.
As I listen to many believers, I am finding something…we don’t practice what we preach. Maybe it’s because we don’t understand. Maybe it’s because we don’t want to.
I find myself swimming in an ocean of grace. Daily I am amazed at the power of God to save me, and to continue the work of regeneration which is also known as sanctification. Many times each day I catch myself saying “Thank God for grace.”
Today during prayer, I stopped after saying something I hadn’t really thought about. I made the following statement, “I would rather err on the side of grace than to not offer it and condemn someone.” Do you believe that statement to be true? Many believe that they are so spiritually superior that they can afford not to offer grace. Some offer a distorted view of grace. Some preach grace but only for the non-believer getting saved. They say it’s for all but after you come to Christ, it is expected to be perfect.

If Grace Is An Ocean…then let me daily receive it for myself. Let me bask in His presence every day and understand that it is by grace that I have been saved through faith, and that it is not of myself, but a gift of God. So now I can’t boast about it being my works. Let me be thankful each day of the grace that saved a wretch like me.

If Grace Is An Ocean…then let me understand that the same grace that saved me is also able to keep me. I’m not so much worried about doing something and being banished from His presence. I now live as His child and I don’t want to disappoint my Father. There is freedom in serving God when I know that I’m ministering to Him because I want to, not necessarily because I have to. Let me be thankful each day that His grace has brought me safe thus far and His grace will lead me home.

If Grace Is An Ocean…then let me understand that it is not a license to do whatever I want. If I allow it, His grace has power over my life to purge the old from my life and transform me into the image of Christ. Let me be thankful each day that His grace has brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home.

If Grace Is An Ocean…let me understand that it is my responsibility to pour this grace on others. When I offer grace to others, I am partaking in the divine nature of God. Jesus said that when He was naked, no one clothed Him. When she was in prison, no one came to visit Him. When He was hungry, no one fed Him. When asked when He was naked, in prison, and hungry, He simply replied, “when you have done it unto the least of these, you have done it unto Me. Let me be thankful each day that I can bring others through this grace so that when we’ve been there ten thousand years…we’ve no less days to sing His praise than when we first begun.

And finally, If Grace Is An Ocean….then let me drown!

Gratia vobis et pax
Grace to you and peace
