Of course, on this tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we look back and remember those tragic events. I wonder if that was the feeling of those who were around during the attacks on Pearl Harbor? If we had the technology then that we have today, I’m sure we would still be seeing those pictures brought out ever year to once again stir up the feelings.
While I may never forget where I was when it first happened or the images that I can still recall of the first responders running to and not away from the flames, I think it is also good not to let certain things consume our thoughts. Any time we give thoughts a place in our minds, we exalt them to a place of importance…good or bad. So many times throughout the scriptures we are told to meditate on the good things of God. We are also taught to “bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” Every thought we have must be filtered through Christ and His Word. We are also instructed to renew our minds through the washing of the water and the word. When we have our minds renewed, every thought that comes into our mind will be run through a virus scan. We will begin to recognize the schemes of the devil more quickly and accurately.
One thing I was taught years ago and try to follow is not to rehearse things. When something bad happens or maybe someone says something to me, I try not to go over it again and again. If someone does something to me, I must place them at the cross, forgive them, and move on. If someone says something to me that is offensive or vindictive, I must take those words and put them into prison and throw away the keys. To keep thinking about them and letting the words or events play out in my mind is destructive and not healthy.
So as we remember those brave men and women on this Patriot Day, remember the good that they have done but try not to dwell in the past and let this tragic day consume us and keep us from living healthy lives. And don’t let the things of your past keep you from being whole. Lay them all at the foot of the cross.
Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious-the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.
