So, today hasn’t been the best of days. Emotionally, I feel drained and physically I feel defeated. Not a good testimony for someone in a “word of faith” environment. Heck, if I were me…and I am…I wouldn’t want to be around me.
So what’s a guy to do? Of course, call your closest friends who will listen, pray, give sound advice, or all three. So that’s what I did. While each one was compassionate, loving, and kind, I walked away feeling like I was still in the same situation. I like change and it just wasn’t happening. Not that anyone had the answers though. Going into each conversation, I never expected anything more than simple friendship.
However, something happened to me in the strangest of places. As I was driving, I ended up pulling into a little ice cream shop that sits beside a local road and decided to get an ice cream cone. You understand this…ice cream can smooth over the bumpiest of days. I ordered my cone and sat at a table looking at a beautiful rolling hill. Actually it was a mountain but since I was on the top, it didn’t look so intimidating. Now there’s a sermon for someone lol. Anyway, I sat there trying to keep up with the melting of my cone and talking to God. Actually at this point I was listening more. Then He spoke. “Why are you looking at the hills? They can’t help you.” Immediately, Psalm 121 came to me:
I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains. He won’t let you stumble, your Guardian God won’t fall asleep. Not on your life! Israel’s Guardian will never doze or sleep. God’s your Guardian, right at your side to protect you— Shielding you from sunstroke, sheltering you from moonstroke. God guards you from every evil, he guards your very life. He guards you when you leave and when you return, he guards you now, he guards you always.
Psalm 121:1-8 MSG
As much as I love my friends, they are not my source. While they may care and be there for me, my help does not come from them. My help comes from the Lord, maker of heaven and earth. In fact, the Message Bible says that my Guardian God won’t even go to sleep, but instead is right at my side protecting me. Sorry, but even the best of friends have to sleep sometime. Even superheros sleep. My God doesn’t.
So now, God speak and Creator move…show Your true self. I may bend but I won’t break. I will be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
nice post and so full of truth! Praise God!
Ice cream is so good. It’s nice to know that God can speak while you’re enjoying it. Thanks for the comment Dawn!
