While driving to work the other morning, I observed a fog that had settled into the valley. I pulled over to view how this fog had settled in the valley and on the tops of the mountain ridges on either side, it was totally clear and beautiful. While taking in the wonders of the world we live in, I began to hear that still small voice speaking to me.
Have you ever felt like you are living in a fog? Do you ever get the feeling like there is something more or maybe you just aren’t seeing the whole picture?
Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our lives that we just can’t see more than a few feet in front of us. The mind is so complex yet so simple. We have an enemy who would love to trap us in a false world of reality. If he can get us to believe that what we are seeing is the truth, then we will believe we can’t do anything about it. When we are in a fog, what we are really seeing is bits and pieces of truth, but not THE TRUTH.
There are a few things I have learned from driving through thick fog that have some good spiritual applications:
1. Follow the tail lights of the person in front of you. By doing this, you can maintain a fixed point that can ease your way through the fog. Of course, we should always keep our eyes on Jesus, the Author and the Finisher of our faith. He will never steer us in the wrong direction. One of my favorite hymns says, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”
2. Maintain a constant speed. Of course you should slow down, but stay consistent, especially if there are others behind you. Our relationship with God should always remain, even in times of confusion or disillusionment.
3. As in the picture, know the fog doesn’t go on forever. Your situation is not eternal. There is an end. God even tells us that He knows the plans He has for us. Plans of peace and an expected end. Trust the God who created the universe. Everything seen and unseen has been created by Him.
As you go through this journey of life, take someone with you. Jesus said He wouldn’t leave us or abandon us. He’s great company and He’s already been where we’re going.
I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.
