Do Nothing

In this ever-increasing age of technology and marketers catering to every whim we have, it’s tough sometimes to just stop and do nothing.  As someone who struggles with constantly keeping my mind on several tasks at once, either because of a chemical problem or just because I’ve succumbed to the habits of my mind, at times it becomes difficult for me to just stop and do nothing.  Many people deal with ADD or ADHD and it isn’t good for most.

A friend taught me a process where I stop, turn off every form of stimulus possible…including my cell phone, tv, and anything else that could distract me…and just sit there quietly.  I’ve made it to around 20 minutes before I usually fall asleep.  Let me tell you that it is not easy.  It’s taken me a while to get to 20 minutes.  Even as a child, I never sat still.  Of course, as most children act, it was a task for my mom to get me to take a nap.  Now I love an afternoon nap.

This morning during the AM Cafe on He’s Alive, Melissa was talking about a website created by a man who was noticing this problem within our society.  So, as many people do, he created a website called donothingfor2minutes.com   At this site, there is a simple picture of an ocean and the sound of ocean waves.  Your task is to take 2 minutes and do absolutely nothing.  Don’t touch your mouse, don’t touch your keyboard, but DO relax and enjoy the moment.  I encourage you to try it out.  Maybe visit the site once a day and learn to just relax.  Studies are showing that the internet is re-wiring our brains to get a jolt every time we go online or visit one of the social networking sites.

Do you have techniques that help you relax?  Share them with the community.  Maybe what works for you will help someone else.  Maybe you have a child or two and you’ve found creative ways to clear you mind and refresh yourself.  Let us know.

Live long and prosper…
