Fevers…Good???

Here is an article on fevers that was sent to me from some friends at Mt State Wellness in Morgantown, WV.  Dr’s. Lucas and Amy Watterson have a unique practice/ministry where they literally take the mandate from Christ to “lay hands on the sick and see them recovered.”  They use the Nucca technique in their practice.  I encourage you to contact them about their services.

Dear Practice Members:

I recently had a conversation with a practice member about her daughters recent experience with a fever for 5 days!  During the conversation, it was clearly evident that this very concerned mother did not understand the purpose of a fever and how the human body works to eliminate infection.  Then I began to think….I wonder if all my practice members know and understand the true purpose of a fever?

A major misperception about fever is that “it”, the fever, is bad!  The fever is the entity that we need to eliminate and then my child will feel better.  The great insufficiency in the medical model of healthcare is the idea that suppressing symptoms actually helps you get well!  Symptoms are not evil and in fact, they serve a greater purpose than you probably think.  I will be the first to confess that symptoms are not comfortable but I will not submit to the idea that they are an unnecessary evil that needs to be eliminated immediately.  Symptoms are merely signs from the body that changes are about to occur or are already occurring within the body!

Let’s discuss the fever in more detail!  This concerned mother could not understand why after five days of attempting to eliminate her daughters’ fever, the little girl was still suffering with it?  She told me that she went to the medical doctor and had been giving her Tylenol and that she was still having the fever.  It was at this moment that I began to explain the purpose of a fever!  A fever is part of the immune response in the body to heat up the tissues and thereby suck large amounts of calcium from the bones.  The calcium is then transported into the bloodstream where white blood cells will use the calcium for a fuel source to fight the invading infectious agent!  White blood cells  produced by the human body are designed to fight, kill and eliminate any foreign materials that have entered the body.  So, it begs the question…why would anyone want to eliminate the process (fever) that is supplying fuel to your innate army that is ultimately going to kill the infection and help you become well again?

You have probably heard that high fevers can cause seizures and brain damage.  OK, let’s be reasonable here!  The American Academy of Pediatrics has determined that the risk of permanent brain damage from fever is extremely small and can only occur in the most extreme cases of infection.  A fever must exceed 103 degrees to be considered that dangerous!  I understand that caution is necessary but why are we routinely suppressing fevers that are less than 103 degrees…..because of a lack of understanding!  This particular mother was actually lengthening the infection in her little girls body by eliminating the best possible solution….the FEVER!

It is my desire for you to learn and apply the truth to your health and wellness.  Please remember that fevers under 103 degrees are actually helping you or your child become well!  It is sufficient to help your child be comfortable and endure the process without eliminating the fever, but after the infection has cleared, your child will be much more resistant to future invasions!

Hooray for fevers!

Be wise and be well,

Dr. Amy J. Watterson
