I was watching a movie the other day and a statement made by the star seemed to jump out at me. The actor said, “I don’t want to make my problems your problems.” Whoa!!! Back up the train. I had to hear it again. Yep, I was right.
I know from experience that that is the mentality of most people, including Christians. Shouldn’t we act differently? I remember in the movie Crocodile Dundee, they said that if anyone had a problem they would just take it to Wally (I think) and he would tell everyone else and presto, no problem. I’m not advocating that but there is merit to it.
Who do pastors go to? So many pastors are islands to themselves and don’t have any real close friends. Who do counselors go to? Men are terrible at this. We bottle it up and either hope it will go away or try to fix it. Galatians 6:2 says to “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
Isn’t the body of Christ supposed to hurt when one part is hurting and rejoice when one part is rejoicing? There has been a downward spiral in this area since the early days of life. Remember when Cain killed Abel and God asked where his sibling was and he asked God, “Am I my brothers keeper?” In the book of Acts, they even had all things in common. Nope, it wasn’t the social Gospel, it was a genuine care for one another.
I have a couple close friends. I am probably not extremely open all the time with them….must be the guy thing. However, I have called them up from time to time to seek advice or just to dump my problems. They are very good at listening. They don’t judge but they will give me direction. I have given them permission to be open and blunt if necessary. I never want them to be my source, but they are there to bear burdens and help me with my blind spots. They are truth-speakers.
Have you ever heard the song that was written by Dottie Rambo? Where do I go when there’s no one else to turn to? Who do I talk to when no one wants to listen? Who do I lean on when there’s no foundation stable? I go to the Rock, I know He’s able. I go to the Rock!
I have a list that I pray over every day. It will change with priorities but there is always a long list of names that never seems to get shorter. I encourage you to be a burden-bearer for someone. I also pray that you have someone to turn to. Please let me know if I can pray with you.
For there is one God and one Mediator also between God and men, the man Jesus Christ.
