Frere Jacques…..Are You Sleeping?

Remember this song from when you were growing up? For some reason, I was thinking about it this morning when I woke up.

This reminded me of the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. I’m one to talk though. I very seldom go to sleep before 2 AM and I’m usually up around 6:30 or 7. Except for Saturday’s of course. I usually try to sleep in as late as I can on those days, which is usually no later than 9

I have heard that we should get 8 good hours of sleep each night Without it, we enter something called sleep debt. It’s kind of like what the government does with money….always borrowing and never repaying. LOL! It’s not good for you and it will eventually catch up with you.

Anyway, it is important to our physical health to get plenty of sleep. I even read somewhere that when we don’t get enough sleep, our physical body ages at a much faster rate. That explains it….no wonder I feel so old.

I have long been a proponent for taking as many vitamins as I could at night as opposed to taking them in the morning. I’m not saying you should take a lot at night, but if you are going to take them, then take whatever you can at night. Some can’t be and I understand that. My reasoning for taking vitamins and supplements at night is because when you are resting, your body heals itself. There is a healing that takes places when you rest. Ever hear a doctor tell you to go work really hard to get rid of the flu? I haven’t. When you rest, your body takes that time to replenish and restore your cells.

I believe your mind can also begin a healing process when you are resting. Dreams are a way of your mind sorting through and processing the days events. They say we dream every night but most people don’t remember them. I do remember some dreams. And some dreams don’t come from your mind. They are connections from God.

I don’t believe that resting is an optional matter to God. After all, He rested on the 7th day. Then, He declared it to be a Holy Day. Now why would He do that if He wasn’t serious about it? Do you think He rested on the 7th day because He needed it? Of course not! He was setting a pattern for us.

Oh, and by the way, the 7th day really is Saturday. Sunday is not the Sabbath. Modern Christendom has established Sunday as a day of celebration. It honors God’s first day of creation and the resurrection of Jesus on the first day of the week. Some even believe that when John wrote from the isle of Patmos, when he said he was in the spirit on the Lord’s day, that it was actually Sunday.

My point in saying all of this is not to tell you that you have to rest on Saturday. It is to encourage you to take time to rest. Whatever day is feasible for you. Make it a point to set aside a day each week as a day of rest. Do what makes you feel good. Maybe you like to ride your bicycle. Maybe you like to walk. Maybe you like to spend time with friends and family. While your doing those things, make some time when you can get together with the King of the Universe. He wants to spend time with you every day, but make this a special time between you both.

Six days are you to do work but on the seventh you shall cease from you labor…. Exodus 23:12

  1. I have taken many vitamins and many combinations. I know Omega 3’s are very good for you. I believe they are part of the essentials….B-Complex, C, and E. If this was a perfect world, then we could get our nutrients from our food, but very few people eat whole foods and even if they did, a lot of the soil is nutritionally depleted. Just make sure they are from a good source…not every bottle on the market is equal.

  2. Yes that is true. You will want to make sure the Omega 3’s are mercury free. Did you also know the Omega 3’s help alleviate the symptoms of depression with out all the side effects?
